A Return to London

Last winter I had the absolute pleasure of traveling to that beautifully crowded and historic city I grew up in – London.

London – that multicultural multilayered collage of people, language, food and architecture. After being away for some years I had forgotten how quickly the sky darkened by 3pm, a portent of the intense chill of the evening.

London is a microcosm of the universe – vast possibilities conveyed in the diversity of the people and architecture. There is an invitation to be strange and eclectic. It is the multi-culturalism, the creolization that gives the city texture and flavor – mirrored in my childhood home where Jimmy Cliff and Oasis played on the radio, and I scoffed down a plate of curry goat and rice, finished off with a cup of PG Tips.

Sparks of Inspiration is an occasional letter where I gather what’s been shaping my creative attention — across writing, visual work, and the wider field of culture I move through, including the exhibitions, readings, and events that inspire or involve me.

Each issue may include reflections on writing practice, recommendations for books, films, music, or designers whose work speaks to me, a question or idea I’m ruminating on, or an audio recording of a poem or short piece read aloud.

These letters are multi-dimensional but they’re shaped as a single reading experience — closer to a page from an artist’s notebook than a list of links.

I’m interested in collecting and composting ideas, so I write when something begins to cohere.
