October Newsletter 2024

Daydream by Cherone Bellinfantie. Paper, watercolor, fabric, ink, glitter

According to my personal numerology, October has been a number 6 month which means more focus on domestic issues, personal relationships, harmony and beauty. As the year winds down to a close, I have been reviewing the year and reflecting on what I value most in relationship to myself and others and how to achieve inner harmony and peace when I am feeling stressed or anxious. This has been an active year!

When considering how to direct the new year harmoniously, we must move forward with complete authenticity, which is expressed when we truly accept and respect our values. In slowing down to reflect on all this, I have revived a steady practice of the yogic deep breathing techniques known as pranayama, in particular sitali and nadi shodhana, during meditation sessions. These have been vital to receiving clarity and inner peace.

Pranayama is an ancient yogic breathing technique that involves controlling the breath to increase harmony, vitality and energy. The word pranayama comes from the Sanskrit words prana, meaning life energy, and ayama, meaning to extend or draw out.

Reading and Writing Poetry Can Be Used As Prayer and Meditation

I was invited to give a short talk to the Nature Coast Unitarian Church on the subject of poetry as prayer and meditation. Here are some excerpts from that speech:

In the News

My journals and chapbook There Is Nothing Between These Atoms are all available in the gallery shop of the Brick City Center for the Arts in Ocala Florida. This gallery hosts various themed group shows throughout the year in addition to an eclectic shop and other creative community events like Spoken Word Ocala.

Sparks of Inspiration

Music

  • I listen to a lot of instrumental music these days, especially when I am writing. Here are a couple of songs I have had on repeat this month for the beautiful melodies and transcendental feeling they evoke. In the Middle of Nowhere by Hammock and On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter. Check out my Transcendent playlist on Spotify to listen to these and other songs that will spirit you away.

Art

  • I often use Pinterest to gather reference images and inspiration for projects I am working on. Recently I have been looking back through boards I created ages ago and rediscovered a favorite called Poetic Imagery. Check it out here.

Books

  • I faithfully attended the Friends of the Alachua County Public Library Fall book sale this month but only came away with one bag as opposed to the huge hoard I usually drag home. Nevertheless, I found some beautifully illustrated children’s books including an activity book on posters which I will be keeping just for me!
